Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking an engineer with several years experience in Aerospace manufacturing and composite part development. This role is for a self-starting, hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California. 

Your Mission

  • Provide manufacturing engineering support for integration of mechanical subassemblies, propulsion and avionics systems into Launcher One. 
  • Responsible for developing tooling concepts required for manufacturing and for coordinating with the tooling team on design and fabrication 
  • Creation of work instructions and work orders for the assembly and integration processes within the scope of the role
  • Responsible for providing manufacturing engineering oversight and input during assembly and integration processes on production shop floor
  • Provide technical expertise into the design of the components and assemblies to maximize quality level, minimize cost, and achieve rate targets
  • Responsible for the layout of the integration processes in the facility, continually analysing and planning workflow, space requirements and equipment layout
  • Responsible to develop error-proofing techniques to minimize risk and assure build quality
  • Provide support to root cause manufacturing issues in development and production
  • Provide the specification, evaluation and implementation of new capital equipment to support rate or improve efficiency.
  • Evaluate alternative manufacturing and assembly processes to improve quality and cost
  • Stay current on the latest technology and implement new technology as appropriate into the manufacturing process.

What you bring

If you want to join us, you'd better have all these....

  • Engineering degree in aerospace, mechanical or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Experience creating processes for mechanical assembly, fluid systems, and avionics systems integration based on CAD models, drawings, and specifications. 
  • Capacity and rate planning experience for manual work centers and capital equipment.   
  • Demonstrated experience in DFx techniques to support reduced cost and lean manufacturing
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all around awesomeness


....and you should probably have some of these, too.

  • Experience developing and executing functional test plans for launch vehicles or complex assemblies is a plus. 
  • Demonstrated experience in new product introductions within aerospace, aviation or automotive
  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing and its application to low and medium volume production programs
  • Experience with training technicians and others in the correct integration techniques for propulsion and avionics systems. 
  • Experience with TeamCenter, Siemens NX and Oracle
  • Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and paperless/electronic work instructions
  • Experience with pressurized systems, procedures, and best practices.
  • Familiar with the use of PFMEAs to reduce risk to the manufacturing process.
  • Creative problem solver; able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills
  • Formal GD&T training or certification. 
  • Experience working in both R&D and production rate environments
  • Travel to Mojave and other launch sites to support test campaigns and launch campaigns is likely 10-25% of the time.
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours min.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted).
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a "one person team"


ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
